  Paranormal TV Shows
Posted by brendan @ Tue Jul 01, 2008 10:26 pm
Paranormal Themed TV Shows seem to be all the rage in the entertainment industry right now. You will find one on most channels on a regular basis whether it be a TV Series with a particular focus on the occult and the supernatural or one of the many Live and pre recorded shows in which investigations of allegedly haunted places take place and a medium is invited to try and make contact with the spirits of the dead.

Whilst the fictional shows are great fun to watch and usually get a huge cult following there is an air of scepticism about the shows that claim to be genuinely able to contact the dead. One argument about shows like this is that something called ‘Mass Hysteria’ plays a huge part in what the participants in the filming of the show, and the viewer’s all experience. The definition of mass hysteria is as follows:

“A condition in which a large group of people exhibit the same state of violent mental agitation.”

This could explain a huge portion of the supposed strange and supernatural goings on that we witness on paranormal related shows that feature live investigations and group activities. Take for example that there is to be an experiment shown involving making direct contact with the dead through one of the guest mediums. The rest of the people in the room would more than likely be expecting paranormal experiences of some sort, after all it is what they have been told they are there for, so the brain already has the implanted notion of what to expect. All it would take from that moment onwards is for someone in the room to feel… say a cold breeze on the back of their neck, and this would automatically set panic in with the rest of the group and the chances are they would either think that they too can feel the cold breeze, or be too embarrassed to be the only one in the room to say that they can’t actually feel it. What it all boils down to is that unless you are in the room with this group of people and not just watching it from the comfort of your TV screens you can never know for sure just how much of what you are viewing can be put down to the effects of mass hysteria or simply the want or need to experience something paranormal. At the end of the day, paranormal themed programs are great fun to watch, but should maybe be taken with a pinch of salt with regards to how much notice you really take of the ‘evidence’ that is found on the investigations. It is also worth bearing in mind that most of the programs are actually broadcast as ‘Entertainment’ shows rather than documentaries or investigative programs so that should act as a bit of a clue as to what to expect when you next tune in.

Haunted house put up for sale
Posted by brendan @ Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:34 pm
Spain's most famous haunted house has gone up for sale, with potential buyers offered the chance of sharing their home with a cast of ghosts whose faces allegedly appear on floors and walls.
The unique selling point of the whitewashed house, 5 Real Street, in the village of Bélmez de la Moraleda, in the southern province of Jaén - is its kitchen.

It was here, 33 years ago, that María Gómez first found the outline of a human face which appeared in the concrete floor. She chipped away at the cement to get rid of it, but soon a cast of a dozen other faces and outlines of whole bodies began to appear.

The phenomenon became so famous in Spain that queues of visitors formed every weekend. Scientists set about proving that Gómez must have painted the figures.

The state-run centre for scientific investigation became involved and the kitchen was closed off under the supervision of a notary. But when it was reopened three months later, the faces were still there.

A two-metre trench was dug, revealing bones from a 13th-century graveyard. "The strange thing was that they found bones but no skulls," said Lorenzo Fernandez, the author of a book on the "faces of Bélmez".

A more recent theory is that the faces belong to members of Gómez's family who were massacred during Spain's civil war.

  Work flushed with spooks
Posted by brendan @ Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:30 pm
Workers at a sewage plant can cope with the smell - it's the SPOOKS that bother them.

They have seen ghostly figures, heard unexplained whispering and feel weird charges of energy.

Mark Wey, who has worked at the water treatment centre in Eastbourne, East Sussex, for seven years, said: "Hairs on the back of your neck go up."

The workers asked Mike Kingscote, an expert on the paranormal, to investigate. He took photos which he claimed show "facial features and shadowy figures".

  Scariest challenge yet for Yvette
Posted by brendan @ Sat Jun 07, 2008 5:01 pm
WHEN Yvette Fielding admits it's the scariest thing she's ever done, you'd better sit up and take notice.

The Most Haunted host and producer husband Karl Beattie have put up £1.1m of their own money to launch The Paranormal Channel.

Available on Sky and online from Monday, with plans to launch on cable and Freeview within six months, and ultimately across the world, they hope the new channel will become a favourite haunt for viewers.

"We haven't slept," says the Stockport-born former Blue Peter presenter. "At three in the morning, my eyes ding open and everything starts going through your head.

"Karl's just constantly awake and working through the night. So it's a bit more terrifying than doing the pilot of Most Haunted - which we put our life savings into.

" We just believe in the new channel so much. Fans have told us over the years that they want it but we've had so many false starts. It's a very nervous step to take and a big risk, but I think it's going to be worth taking it."

The Cheshire-based couple's Reddish production company Antix - soon to move to a new home near Media City in Salford - will make a high proportion of the original programming.

Executive producer and presenter Karl explains: "The Paranormal Channel is a light look at the dark side. We'll use drama, documentaries and even comedy to explore anything and everything that is unexplained. But viewers shouldn't underestimate the scariness rating."

Yvette adds: "We've bought all the series of Arthur C. Clarke, which people of my age and older will remember as kids and teenagers. Strange But True with Michael Aspel and lots of documentaries about UFOs, alien abduction and a drama called The Chosen.

"And then Antix Productions are making a show called Whines And Spirits, where Karl goes round Britain looking for the most haunted pub with a guest ghost investigator - a celebrity.

"We've also made a programme called Paul Ross's Big Black Book Of Horror, where Paul reads ghost stories to us every night. That's quite spooky.

Camper van

"Then new for the autumn is Three Screaming Banshees, an entertainment programme with myself, Lesley Smith and Cath Howe from Most Haunted. The three of us travel the country in a camper van, like Charlie's Angels, in search of very horrible, haunted, scary places."

Yvette and Karl are currently coming to the end of filming for series 11 of Most Haunted, which will continue on Living TV, with another series set to be shot in America this summer along with a live special.

Ghost Hunting With...also continues on ITV2, having already terrified the likes of Girls Aloud and Coronation Street stars.

An edition featuring The Happy Mondays is due to be screened in September.

"And the programme with Paul O'Grady in Italy is going out as a Christmas special. Both he and I were in tears. That was one of the most terrifying things I've ever done."

So what does Yvette have to say to the sceptics? "It's healthy to be a sceptic, but give it a go, try it. Don't just snob it away," she replies.

"We were on a location in Wales recently and there was a clock with a pendulum swinging on the mantlepiece, making a really loud ticking noise. And it had stopped.

"No-one was stood anywhere near it - we've got it on camera - and we were getting noises, as if somebody was in the room. I just said, `If you're here, start the clock, make the pendulum swing.' And the next thing it just started - tick, tock, tick, tock. Everybody went, `Whoah.' That was weird.

" For me, it was real. There's definitely life after death," Yvette adds.

  'Opening' naturally
Posted by Stephanie @ Tue Jun 03, 2008 8:35 am
Hi all
Ill give a small explanation of what I mean to start with.
I am a natural spirit medium.
By this I mean that I have never trained or anything but have been proven right about things that spirits have given to me on numerous occassions.
Anyway, I was exhausted and so I 'closed' that side of me down and have been very happy to have the peace and quiet that comes with not having spirits bombard me night and day to communicate with them.
Lately I appear to be 'opening' again naturally and seem to be attracting spirits again, without trying or even really wanting to (I just either ignore them or tell them that Im sorry but they will have to find someone else to talk to/through).
So, what do you think?
Should I allow myself to open up again and let spirit back into my life?
I must be opening up for a reason or else I wouldnt be.
If I was doing investigations then it would prove very useful to be that open, but Im not.
Or should I double up efforts to close again?
I know that noone can make that decision for me but I would appreciate some views and advice.
There has to be a reason for 'fate' wanting me to be open right now, but it seems to be a total waste to have this ability and to waste it, because I dont do readings and I dont do investigations, so its not as if I can use the abilities for anything useful.
xx Steph xx
